Eager to find out, two journalists began to investigate the business dealings of a man allegedly involved in hiding the vast profits of the 'Ndrangheta, a branch of the Italian Mafia. But as this extraordinary three-part People & Power report reveals, little in this complex and secretive world is quite what it seems.

The group, based in the southern region of Calabria, dominates the global cocaine market and has an estimated annual turnover of around $60bn (£49bn). In Italy, entire sectors of the food industry are controlled by the mafia. All over the world, well-organised criminal networks work together to penetrate complex supply chains. Scams range from the intentional mislabelling of inferior products in order to pass them off as premium items, to the substitution of one food stuff for something else entirely. The profits are enormous. But what are the risks to the consumer? How can we identify food fraud? And what can be done to stop it?

In this investigation, we follow the food fraud brigades and reveal how little we know about what we’re eating.

A rogue sect of Mob hitmen known as the East Harlem Purple Gang emerged as a violent force closely linked to the New York Mafia’s Five Families. As law enforcement struggled to track down the killers, the Purple Gang’s vicious tactics became a media obsession. Veteran Mob historian Scott Deitche will provide stories and insights about the East Harlem Purple Gang and reflect on those who remain at large today.

To that Franzese responds to the story by comparing it to a Steven Martin film called "My Blue Heaven," citing that some guys just aren't made to live the simple life.

This topic prompts DJ Vlad to ask the actor if he had ever been in witness protection. Franzese said no, before explaining to the VladTV viewers directly, that although he has spoken with the feds in the past, no one had ever gone to prison based on anything that he told them.

From there, the 55-year-old goes on to explain why being indicted seven times played a role in his desire to get out of the life of being a mobster. In response, DJ Vlad asked him if the offense was considered "breaking the code," which was punishable by death in the mob. Franzese answered yes. Moving along, he then goes on the reveal the name of the gangster who put a hit on him.

In 1986, the Italian justice system launched a counter-offensive, with the Palermo prosecutor's office leading the charge. Judge Giovanni Falcone became a symbol of the fight against the mafia. Three decades on, our correspondents report on how these assassinations by Cosa Nostra sparked an awakening and an ongoing fight against the mafia.

Illegal business is growing more profitable every day. Can something be done to take down this global criminal network?

Corruption and drug trafficking are no longer just local problems. International groups working with terrorist organizations and politicians are ruthlessly spreading violence and endangering innocent lives. Complex infrastructures enable them to evade capture and punishment.

Drug smuggling is a competitive global business. Drug smugglers transport their goods from Latin America to Europe. From international money laundering to transnational murder for hire, we see the devastation underground business leaves in its wake. Murders, explosions, and targeted attacks - they affect not only criminals, but also their families, witnesses, journalists, and other innocent victims.

According to FBI and Europol documents, every country on earth now has its own criminal groups and cartels. They are also gaining a stronger footing in Germany. Take drug trafficking, for example: Germany is a well-organized market and central transport hub for opiates along the Balkan route. South America directly serves the U.S. market. Anyone attempting to expose these groups is placing her or his life on the line.

According figures from the World Bank, organized crime groups spend half of their annual two trillion dollar annual profits bribing politicians across the globe. Those operating with full cooperation from the authorities are behaving more like terror organizations: They use fear and terror, murder and manslaughter. But using the global financial system for money laundering is nothing new. The state earns money through taxes and terror groups get rich in the process.

Drugs and money are not the only things being transported. Smuggling people has also become a lucrative business for organized crime, bringing in about $150 billion each year.

Could conditions like those in Russia develop elsewhere, where politicians, secret services and criminals share common interests? Could this even happen in once stable democracies like the USA or core European states? Is there a way out? Or are law enforcement agencies powerless to stop them?

“There’s always tension. There’s always fear and you must always be careful”, he tells Kelly as he drives to court surrounded by his security motorcade. “You have to tame fear and talk to death.”

Kelly speaks with community members who now feel emboldened to speak out against the mafia. ‘The number of people turning on the mafia has increased’, says anti-mafia activist Giuseppe Borrello. ‘It’s new for Vibo Valentia.”

Gratteri’s actions have given hope to Sara Scarpulla, whose son was blown up in a car bomb organised by a member of the Mancuso family. Kelly also speaks to an anti-mafia prosecutor in Milan, Italy’s financial heart, where the ‘Ndrangheta has established a strong presence.

In Calabria, not everyone in the community is rallying behind Nicola Gratteri’s maxi-trial. “There’s vicious mudslinging aimed at the Prosecutor’s Office’, explains lawyer Giovanna Fronte. “That’s how the ‘Ndrangheta operates.”

For the people of Vibo Valentia, the maxi-trial has raised hopes of a new chapter in which the State regains control of a land long thought lost to organised crime. But can these prosecutions uproot the powerful networks of the ‘Ndrangheta?

On February 14th, 1929, assassins lined up seven men against the wall of a garage in Chicago and opened fire with Thompson submachine guns. News of the Massacre sparked a national outcry to take down the Mob and put an end to Prohibition, which was fueling gang violence across the country.

The bricks from that garage wall, as well as the ballistic evidence collected from the crime scene, are on permanent display in The Mob Museum. The Tommy guns used in the shooting are held by the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department in southwest Michigan. On several occasions over the years, the sheriff’s department has brought the Tommy guns to the Museum for temporary display, creating a grim reunion of artifacts from that fateful day.
