Despite its propensity for internal violence, the gang has no trouble recruiting new members, even from the other side of the law.

We Own This City: How A Corrupt Baltimore Police Task Force Tainted Thousands of Caseshttps://gangstersinc.org/video/we-own-this-city-how-a-corrupt-baltimore-police-task-force-tainte2022-05-11T16:33:54.000Z2022-05-11T16:33:54.000ZGangsters Inc.https://gangstersinc.org/members/GangstersInc

Two Baltimore police officers are on trial this week in federal court for some of this worst misconduct imaginable. Detectives Daniel Hersl and Marcus Taylor were members of Baltimore’s Gun Trace Task Force, an elite group of plainclothes officers expected to get the worst firearms and offenders off the city streets.

Eight of the nine men on the task force have been accused of a range of organized crime-level charges that range from robbery and extortion, to faking evidence, planting drugs, dealing drugs, and other serious crimes. 6 of the officers, Sergeants Thomas Allers and Wayne Jenkins, and Detectives Momodu Gondo, Evodio Hendrix, Maurice Ward, and Jemell Rayam, have all pleaded guilty.

It’s a staggering fall: the Gun Trace Task Force was created by the city in 2007 with the explicit goal of fighting crime and reducing the city’s rising murder rate. For a while, city leaders saw the task force as a huge success, celebrating the firearms and drugs the men had confiscated.

Today, many Baltimore residents consider the task force’s crimes the biggest scandal in recent memory. Freddie Gray’s 2015 death in police custody and the resulting riots dominated years of headlines, but these officers’s misconduct was the low frequency chaos only people in Baltimore’s most vulnerable communities could hear.

In the documentary 'Guardians of Truth', exiled Turkish journalist Can Dündar meets a woman who has locked horns with Mexico’s most powerful entities: the government, and the drug cartels.

In Erdoğan’s Turkey, Can Dündar is public enemy number one. After he uncovered illegal Turkish arms shipments to Syria in 2015, the President said he was a terrorist, and personally called for a life sentence in prison for the journalist. Can Dündar fled to Germany following an attempt on his life during his trial. Since then, he has continued to defend his homeland against the autocrat’s lies, promoting freedom of speech from exile.

Dündar meets the journalist Anabel Hernández, who’s been investigating drug-related crime and corruption in Mexico for more than 20 years, publishing numerous books and articles on the subject. She is best-known for highlighting close links between the government and the drug clans -- ground-breaking research that almost cost her her life. Luckily, she wasn’t at home on the day 11 armed men showed up to shoot her dead. She knew then that she would have to leave her home country.

Not that she doesn’t return from time to time, under tight security, to continue her work and see her family. Can Dündar meets her in exile and then again, during one of these highly dangerous trips back home. He poses the pivotal question: what’s driving her to take this huge risk again and again?

Illegal business is growing more profitable every day. Can something be done to take down this global criminal network?

Corruption and drug trafficking are no longer just local problems. International groups working with terrorist organizations and politicians are ruthlessly spreading violence and endangering innocent lives. Complex infrastructures enable them to evade capture and punishment.

Drug smuggling is a competitive global business. Drug smugglers transport their goods from Latin America to Europe. From international money laundering to transnational murder for hire, we see the devastation underground business leaves in its wake. Murders, explosions, and targeted attacks - they affect not only criminals, but also their families, witnesses, journalists, and other innocent victims.

According to FBI and Europol documents, every country on earth now has its own criminal groups and cartels. They are also gaining a stronger footing in Germany. Take drug trafficking, for example: Germany is a well-organized market and central transport hub for opiates along the Balkan route. South America directly serves the U.S. market. Anyone attempting to expose these groups is placing her or his life on the line.

According figures from the World Bank, organized crime groups spend half of their annual two trillion dollar annual profits bribing politicians across the globe. Those operating with full cooperation from the authorities are behaving more like terror organizations: They use fear and terror, murder and manslaughter. But using the global financial system for money laundering is nothing new. The state earns money through taxes and terror groups get rich in the process.

Drugs and money are not the only things being transported. Smuggling people has also become a lucrative business for organized crime, bringing in about $150 billion each year.

Could conditions like those in Russia develop elsewhere, where politicians, secret services and criminals share common interests? Could this even happen in once stable democracies like the USA or core European states? Is there a way out? Or are law enforcement agencies powerless to stop them?

Founded during the golden age of the Opium trade to enable the British Empire to access the Chinese market, it has created a unique network to move dirty money around the world. From tax evasion to money laundering for the mafia and manipulation of currency, “this bank had done everything bad that a bank can possibly do.”

In 2012, HSBC nearly lost its license to operate in the US for laundering the money of the Mexican and Columbian drug cartels. Criminal charges were filed and HSBC’s executives hauled before a Senate committee. But George Osborne, UK’s then Chancellor of the Exchequer, wrote to his counterpart in America and to the Chairman of the Federal Reserve to plead for leniency. He claimed that if HSBC received a harsh punishment, it would have serious repercussions on the world’s financial and economic stability. The letter worked and HSBC was fined 2 billion euros. The equivalent of one month’s profits.

As the center of international finance moves to Asia, HSBC is in prime position. It is the most Chinese of Western banks and the most European of Chinese banks. Protected by London, blessed by Beijing, who would dare attack it? This documentary was first released in 2017.

Rampant corruption is hindering development in the country, which is a candidate for EU membership. Now, Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapic is attempting a political awakening. At the end of 2020, a wave of protests swept Zdravko Krivokapic to the very top of Montenegro’s government. Until then, the university professor had not been involved in politics. He vowed to finally do something about the rampant nepotism and corruption that had spread before and during the rule of long-term President Milo Dukanovic. Dukanovic’s supporters believed they would soon bring Krivokapic onto their side. But so far, that hasn’t happened, and the prime minister is cleaning the country up. A report by Miodrag Soric.
