Ever since they came on the scene in the 1950s, Ronnie and Reggie Kray, known as the Kray twins, have dominated the London crime scene and the public’s fascination as well. And they continue to do so. This year, actor Tom Hardy will play both brothers in the epic gangster flick Legend.

Based on John Pearson's book The Profession of Violence, with a screenplay by Brian Helgeland - who won an Oscar for writing LA Confidential, Legend focuses on the Kray’s rise in London’s East End in the fifties and their inevitable downfall in the “swinging sixties,” which concluded with both brothers serving life in prison for two gangland murders.

London’s underworld has always been a moviemaker favorite. From the tense A Long Good Friday starring Bob Hoskins as a crime boss on the verge of making it legit, Guy Ritchie’s larger than life villains of Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch to masterpiece Layer Cake starring Daniel Craig, the city of London offered both filmmakers and moviegoers plenty of locations and stories to work with.

And if groovy London isn’t your bag of tea, then you’ll be pleased to hear that the Italian American Mafia will have some screen time as well. Actor Chazz Palminteri (A Bronx Tale, Analyze This) plays Angelo Bruno, the Philadelphia mob boss who had business interests in London and had to deal with the erratic Krays.

Legend is the latest ode to London’s grimy gangland and looks set to be a riveting one. It will hit theaters in September of this year. You can view the trailer below.
