Mexican authorities arrested Sinaloa cartel boss Dámaso López in an upper middle class neighborhood in Mexico City early Tuesday morning. He was once the right-hand man of the Sinaloa cartel’s supreme leader, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

Nicknamed “El Licenciado,” The Graduate, 51-year-old López is accused of helping his former leader escape from prison in 2001. He also faces drug and money laundering charges in the United States after a federal grand jury in Virginia indicted him in 2011. If convicted he faces life in prison.

More recently, López is believed to have been embroiled in a gangland war against “El Chapo” Guzman’s sons in a battle for control over lucrative territory and drug routes. After Guzman’s arrest and subsequent extradition to the United States, violence has flared in the state of Sinaloa, with several major players, including López, vying for a place on the throne.

Mexican authorities hope to stem some of that violence with the arrest of “El Licenciado,” however, it is unlikely that will happen. The arrest of “El Chapo” showed us that if you behead the beast, it will only grow more heads, each one more vicious than the one before.
