'Ndrangheta Hitman to be Extradited

A Dutch court has ruled that ‘Ndrangheta hitman Giovanni Strangio will be extradited to Italy where he is charged with membership of a criminal organization and involvement in the murder of six Italian men in Duisburg on August 15, 2007. According to Judge Fred Salomon Italian authorities showed they had a stronger case than their German colleagues, who had also sought the extradition of Strangio.

Strangio was arrested in Diemen, The Netherlands on March 12, 2009, and is alleged to have been one of two shooters who murdered six Italian men who had connections to a rival ‘Ndrangheta clan. The six men were murdered in retaliation for the murder of the wife of ‘Ndrangheta boss Giovanni Nirta in December 2006. The six murders took place in front a Da Bruno restaurant in Duisburg, Germany.

German authorities found evidence that Strangio was in Duisburg a few days before the killings took place. He allegedly went into

a gun store and asked questions about a Beretta hand gun. He also rented a car under a false name. Forensic experts later found Strangio’s DNA and gunpowder residue inside the car. However, the evidence was considered too slim to result in a conviction, and thus the Dutch judge agreed to extradite the alleged hitman to Italy instead.

In Italy the 30-year-old Strangio (left) faces a long list of mafia related crimes. According to prosecutors he is a leading member of a clan that exerts control over the village of San Luca and the surrounding area. He and his clan are said to be involved in murders, weapon trafficking, drug smuggling, money laundering, and extortion.
