“King Nene” kneels before the government, in a guilty plea that is. 26-year-old Matthew Palacios, who goes by the nickname “King Nene”, was an enforcer of the Boston-based Devon Street Kings Chapter of the Massachusetts Latin Kings and pleaded guilty Wednesday to racketeering charges.

The Devon Street Kings or D5K Chapter of the Latin Kings, included approximately a dozen members. It is named for its origin on Devon Street in Boston. The Latin Kings have grown from a street gang into an organization that spans the United States and has thousands of members and associates. Its members adhere to a strict code of conduct and face punishment if they break the group’s rules.

Palacios was responsible for meting out this punishment. As a Latin Kings enforcer, he was in charge of violent acts against both fellow gang members and rival gangsters. The Devon Street Kings, in turn, reported to the Massachusetts State Leadership of the Latin Kings, providing information, structure, funds and other resources to further the Latin Kings goals and directives in the state.

During the investigation that ensnared Palacios, various meetings were covertly recorded where he and members of the Devon Street Kings discussed the gang’s business. Palacios was present during meetings where members were beaten and violence against rival gangs was discussed and decided upon.

In December 2019, a federal grand jury returned an indictment alleging racketeering conspiracy, drug conspiracy and firearms charges against 62 leaders, members and associates of the Latin Kings, including Palacios. He is the fourteenth defendant to plead guilty in the case and is scheduled to be sentenced on January 7, 2021. He faces a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
