Justice never forgets. No matter how many years pass after the crime is committed, the law and those who seek to uphold it remember those who broke the rules of our society and thought they got away with it. And they will not rest until justice is served.
Just ask 80-year-old Ralph DeMasi, a former associate of Boston crime boss James “Whitey” Bulger, who was charged last week with the fatal shooting of an armored truck guard in Worcester in 1991. He might be a few years shy of the grave himself, but prosecutors are eager to put him behind bars. Prison is a familiar place for the aging Boston criminal, after having spent over two decades there for another armed robbery.
Though prosecutors claim DeMasi was one of four robbers who shot and killed 52-year-old Edward Morlock as he carried bags of money from a supermarket to his armored truck, DeMasi pleaded not guilty. His lawyer denied DeMasi had any information about the deadly robbery, Associated Press reported Wednesday.
The three other men have all since died, complicating the investigation. Not that they would’ve given much more information. The code of silence is strong among these old-school Boston hoodlums. Even though betrayal is a common theme on this city’s streets.
DeMasi’s boss, James “Whitey” Bulger, is now known as the biggest rat to ever to rule the underworld. After working with the FBI in taking out his rivals in the Patriarca crime family of La Cosa Nostra, Bulger assumed control over much of the city’s rackets.
Now serving out the last few years of his life in prison, Bulger denies having ever been an FBI informant. Instead, he claims he used the FBI. Apparently, DeMasi believes his former boss. According to DeMasi’s daughter, her father and Bulger are prison pen pals, she told AP.
How sweet. Two elderly men writing each other about the good ol’ days. When robbery and murder were an everyday part of their job. When there seemed to be no punishment for any of the crimes they committed.
DeMasi’s next court appearance is scheduled for the new year, January 23, 2017.
