The film Il Traditore (The Traitor) detailing the life of Sicilian Mafia boss-turned-snitch Tommaso Buscetta has been selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival on May 14-25, the event’s organization announced on Thursday.

Directed by Marco Bellocchio, Il Traditore deals with Cosa Nostra’s most volatile period in which the Corleonesi, led by Toto Riina, seized control of the Mafia and wiped out the competition, which included Mafia leader Tommaso Buscetta.

Buscetta is played by actor Pierfrancesco Favino, who audiences may know from his roles in Marco Polo, Angels and Demons, and as a Rome crime boss in Romanzo Criminale.

“Tommaso Buscetta is a very complex character,” Bellocchio told Italian news agency ANSA. “I tried to make an open film and his betrayal, too, must be seen in this light. Strangely, it is a very personal film and at the same time objective.”
