Rufus Young (photo above) was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Wednesday for conspiring to distribute heroin in Ocean and Monmouth counties and elsewhere in New Jersey. 42-year-old Rufus “Equan” Young, of Asbury Park, New Jersey, previously pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin.

The “Britt-Young Organization” was a large-scale drug trafficking operation led by Young and 43-year-old Robert “True” Britt (photo right). The group had several connections who supplied them with heroin and was doing great and very lucrative business, selling a kilo of heroin every week, according to prosecutors.

Young was responsible for, among other things, supplying heroin to various sub-dealers who distributed the drug to others. To carry out the trafficking business, Young maintained several stash house locations that he and his conspirators used to package, store, and sell heroin, including a recording studio in Toms River and two apartments in Neptune, New Jersey. Young was responsible for distributing between one and three kilograms of heroin during the conspiracy which spanned from February 2013 to March 2014.

The drug ring was busted after investigators began wiretapping phones and intercepted incriminating text messages between the group’s members and leaders. Though they used temporary prepaid phones, dumping them after just a few weeks, and spoke in codes to avoid detection, once law enforcement started eavesdropping on them, their successful business was running on borrowed time.

In addition to the prison term, Judge Sheridan sentenced Young to four years of supervised release.

To date, 19 other alleged members or affiliates of the “Britt-Young Organization” have pleaded guilty to narcotics offenses.
