A gangster movie starring Liam Neeson as a notorious hitman for New York’s Irish mob? Yep, that’s what we at Gangsters Inc. call must-see! In the film Run All Night, Neeson plays mobster Jimmy Conlon, an alcoholic whose own son does not want to see him anymore due to his violent profession.

He spends his time hanging around at a social club run by the Irish mob, usually asleep, with empty bottles of Jack Daniels in front of him. He is ridiculed by his fellow gangsters and Danny, the son of crime boss Shawn Maguire played by Ed Harris, does not understand why his father keeps him around.

Viewers kind of have an idea, of course. Even though that idea is mostly based on an entirely different set of movies.

Ed Harris, meanwhile, is no stranger to playing Irish gangsters, having done a great job in the movies A History of Violence and State of Grace. That last movie, also starred Sean Penn, and was based on the true story of The Westies, the Irish mob operating out of Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen.

Though Run All Night is purely fictional, it does refer to several real life mobsters. Characters claim Gambino crime family mobster Roy DeMeo was behind a certain murder and in another scene Jimmy Conlon remembers meeting Mickey Featherstone at a Manhattan restaurant.

Featherstone was a hitman for The Westies who eventually testified against his former boss Jimmy Coonan and disappeared into the Witness Protection Program.

Ever since they came on the scene in the 1950s, Ronnie and Reggie Kray, known as the Kray twins, have dominated the London crime scene and the public’s fascination as well. And they continue to do so. This year, actor Tom Hardy will play both brothers in the epic gangster flick Legend.

Based on John Pearson's book The Profession of Violence, with a screenplay by Brian Helgeland - who won an Oscar for writing LA Confidential, Legend focuses on the Kray’s rise in London’s East End in the fifties and their inevitable downfall in the “swinging sixties,” which concluded with both brothers serving life in prison for two gangland murders.

London’s underworld has always been a moviemaker favorite. From the tense A Long Good Friday starring Bob Hoskins as a crime boss on the verge of making it legit, Guy Ritchie’s larger than life villains of Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch to masterpiece Layer Cake starring Daniel Craig, the city of London offered both filmmakers and moviegoers plenty of locations and stories to work with.

And if groovy London isn’t your bag of tea, then you’ll be pleased to hear that the Italian American Mafia will have some screen time as well. Actor Chazz Palminteri (A Bronx Tale, Analyze This) plays Angelo Bruno, the Philadelphia mob boss who had business interests in London and had to deal with the erratic Krays.

Legend is the latest ode to London’s grimy gangland and looks set to be a riveting one. It will hit theaters in September of this year. You can view the trailer below.

After years of anticipation the Feds finally brought another indictment against the hierarchy of the Philadelphia Mafia family this week. Fifteen alleged leaders, members, and associates of the South Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey-based mob were hit with a variety of charges including racketeering conspiracy, illegal gambling, loansharking, extortion, and drug trafficking.

“From loansharking and illegal gambling to drug trafficking and extortion, the mob continues to keep its fingers in many different pots, in its ceaseless quest for illegal profits,” said Michael J. Driscoll, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Philadelphia Division. “This group should’ve learned by now that the FBI is as committed to eradicating organized crime as wiseguys are to embracing it.”

From underboss to soldier and “Joey Electric” to “Tony Meatballs”

Among the defendants are high-ranking mobsters like alleged former acting boss and current underboss Steven Mazzone (recent photo above and old one on the right); Mazzone’s brother Salvatore, a soldier; and 55-year-old capo Domenic Grande. They are joined by 60-year-old Joseph Servidio, known as “Joey Electric”; 70-year-old Joseph Malone; 56-year-old Louis Barretta, who goes by the nickname “Louie Sheep”; 56-year-old Victor DeLuca; 67-year-old Kenneth Arabia; 67-year-old Daniel Castelli; 81-year-old Carl Chianese; 73-year-old Anthony Gifoli, known as “Tony Meatballs”; 58-year-old John Romeo; 75-year-old Daniel Malatesta; 66-year-old Daniel Bucceroni; and 34-year-old John Michael Payne.

Plot to kill drug dealer

According to prosecutors, the Philadelphia crime family was involved in various criminal rackets like bookmaking, running an illegal gambling business, drug dealing, and loansharking in Philadelphia and southern New Jersey, particularly Atlantic City.

Their involvement in the drug trade showed they were in it for the long haul. They are charged with the distribution of heroin, cocaine, fentanyl, methamphetamine and oxycodone pills. When a drug dealer sold one of the mobsters fake narcotics, the Mafia family plotted to retaliate by kidnapping or murdering the man in order to show the streets what happened when you messed with the Philly crime family.

Opening the books

While running these criminal activities, the Philly Mafia also found time to open the books and initiate some new members into the family of La Cosa Nostra. On October 15, 2015, Steven Mazzone, Domenic Grande and Salvatore Mazzone allegedly participated in a “making ceremony” in a South Philadelphia residence, during which several new soldiers were inducted into the Philadelphia family.

“Thanks to the dedicated and courageous efforts of federal law enforcement over the past several decades, the Philadelphia mob isn’t what it used to be, and thank God for that,” said U.S. Attorney McSwain. “But it is still a problem and is still allegedly committing serious federal crimes, which is why we at the Department of Justice are focused on stamping it out. We will not rest until the mob is nothing but a bad memory.”
