Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, was released from prison this week. She had been locked up since her 2021 arrest on drug and money laundering charges.

The former beauty queen had pleaded guilty in 2021 to conspiracy to distribute heroin, cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamine for a period of at least 6 years, money laundering, and to helping her husband escape from a Mexican prison in 2015. She was sentenced to a mere 3 years behind bars on November 30, 2021.

She served most of her time at FMC Carswell in Fort Worth, Texas, a minimum-security federal prison. To serve out her remaining months in detention she was transferred to Long Beach Residential Reentry Management in California.

Aispuro and Guzman have two daughters together. The pair met while she was only just 17 with “El Chapo” being decades older. When she turned 18, they married. Guzman is currently doing life in a maximum security facility in Colorado after his conviction in July 2019. He was also ordered to pay $12.6 billion in forfeiture.
