Former Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) analyst and organized crime expert Pierre de Champlain passed away on July 15. He was 74. De Champlain authored several books on the Mafia in Italy and North America and contributed several articles to this site.

His obituary reads: “A native of Rimouski, Pierre studied at the University of Ottawa, then worked for twenty years in the House of Commons in the area of parliamentary procedure. He ended his professional career as a civilian employee of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, where he worked as a Criminal Intelligence Analyst. Pierre also devoted many years of his life to the research and study of criminal organizations, on which he wrote several books.”

Among the books he authored are Cosa nostra: histoire de la mafia nord-Américain (1979), Organized crime in Montreal 1940-1980 (1986), Gangsters and men of honor: Cracking the Mafia Code (2005), and Histoire du organized crime in Montreal, volumes 1 and 2 (2014 and 2017).

Since starting this website and frequenting various online message boards, I got to meet De Champlain, Pierre, on the digital web and met a man who was friendly and always willing to discuss or share his knowledge of organized crime. As the years went by, I also got to know the man behind our shared interest. He was kind and smart with a great sense of humor.

He will be missed. Our condolences go out to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace, Pierre.

The family will receive condolences on Saturday, July 31, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., at the Coopérative funéraire de l'Outaouais, 95, boul. de la Cité-des-Jeunes, Gatineau (Hull sector). A religious celebration will begin at 2 p.m. at the same location, followed by a reception.

Below are two articles Pierre wrote for Gangsters Inc. I also interviewed him for several more articles on the Mafia.
