Six Genovese crime family mobsters caught up in an illegal gambling and loansharking bust pleaded guilty to racketeering charges. One had done so in previous months, five did so last week. These Genovese family wiseguys participated in loansharking, extortion, operating illegal gambling businesses, and transmission of gambling information. They had been arrested in April of 2022.

Genovese family capo Ralph Balsamo (photo above) and soldier Michael Messina were the last two to plead guilty, doing so on February 9. They will be sentenced on June 28. Genovese mob associate Thomas Poli pleaded guilty on September 29, 2022, and will be sentenced on April 13. Genovese capo Nicholas Carlisi, soldier John Campanella, and associate Michael Poli pleaded guilty on February 8 and will be sentenced on June 27.

They face up to 20 years when sentenced, but will likely get lesser sentences.

Prosecution despite insulation

“We remain committed to protecting the people of the Southern District of New York from being preyed on by organized crime,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said. “Today’s pleas demonstrate that those who swear a lifetime allegiance to criminal organizations will be prosecuted, no matter their efforts to insulate themselves.”
