An alleged drugs and firearms supplier and one of the Britain’s most wanted men has been arrested in Marbella, Spain. 29-year-old Dean Garforth was riding an e-bike on a street in Nueva Andalucia, Marbella, when he was arrested on Monday afternoon in a pre-planned law enforcement operation.

He was located and arrested after an operation by the National Crime Agency (NCA), Spanish National Police and Cheshire Police. When he realized plain-clothed officers were closing in, Garforth, who was wearing sports clothes, sunglasses and a cap, rode the bike into an officer and resisted arrest.

Crimestoppers & campaign

A public appeal to help trace Garforth (right) was made in January this year when the NCA and Crimestoppers launched a new Most Wanted campaign featuring 12 fugitives who were believed to be hiding in Spain.

He is wanted by Cheshire Police for alleged involvement in a well-established organized crime group, supplying significant quantities of cocaine and cannabis, and being involved in trading firearms and ammunition between March 2020 and July 2020.

EncroChat

It is alleged he used the now defunct encrypted comms platform EncroChat to facilitate these offences in and around the North West of England and that his crime group also adulterated the drugs before moving them on.

Garforth, whose last known address was South Hill Road, Dingle, Liverpool, is the sixth fugitive from the list to be arrested since the Most Wanted campaign was launched in January.

He is in custody awaiting the beginning of extradition proceedings.

Convicted Rochester Mafia family hitman Dominic Taddeo was sentenced this week to 3 years in federal prison for his escape from a half-way house in Orlando, Florida. Despite being one year away from his release, 65-year-old Taddeo decided to flee. He will serve his latest sentence consecutively to his remaining term of imprisonment on other federal convictions.

What exactly went through Taddeo’s mind on March 28, 2022, will remain a mystery for the foreseeable future. On that day he was granted a community pass to leave the half-way house where he had been staying after his transfer from the Coleman Correctional Institution for a medical appointment.

Instead of returning as required, Taddeo vanished without a trace and made headlines on several news stations throughout the country. Who could blame them? This wasn’t your average convict.

Killing for the Rochester crime family

Taddeo was a deadly hitman for the Mafia in Rochester. He murdered three men in the early 1980s and was also involved in two separate failed hit attempts on a Rochester crime family capo during the internecine mob war between two factions within the Rochester family.

He hit the capo with six shots from a .22-caliber as the mob captain left an apartment in April 1983. Miraculously, he survived. In November of that year, Taddeo did a second attempt. This time he fired ten bullets into the mob capo. Again, the mob leader survived.

The fugitive

After making bail in 1987, Taddeo disappeared, a preamble to his antics this year. That time he remained a fugitive for two years, while moving around and using various aliases. He was arrested in 1989 and pleaded guilty in 1992 to racketeering charges that included the three Mafia slayings. For this, he earned a sentence of 54 years behind bars.

With that sentence almost over, just one more year to serve, he went on the lam again. This time, it took authorities one week to catch him. He was arrested on April 4. At the time of his arrest Taddeo was in possession of over $5,000 cash and a driver license of a deceased individual.

Still up to his old tricks, it seems.

Taddeo pleaded guilty to his escape on May 17 resulting in his sentencing this week. Why he fled no one knows. Instead of being out of prison in a few months, he will now be sitting in a cell for several more years.

It’s a damn mob mystery if ever there was one.

The Ghost Boss of the Sicilian Mafia: Police step up hunt for Messina Denaro, Italy's most wanted fugitive

Matteo Messina Denaro is a Mafia ghost. Despite being one of the world’s most wanted fugitives, authorities remain unable to pinpoint his whereabouts. The Sicilian Cosa Nostra boss has been on the run since 1993, but Italian police believe he continues to run his criminal empire while evading his hunters.

Yesterday, police in Italy arrested 35 people as part of a broader investigation into Messina Denaro. Agents raided several locations in Trapani, a city in western Sicily which is Messina Denaro’s longtime stronghold and base of operations. His word is still final in this area of Italy and, according to police, he still issues commands on how the local Mafia clan and related activities are to be run.

Those arrested on Tuesday are suspected of criminal conspiracy, extortion and gambling, among other offences.

Hunting down fugitive Mafia bosses

Italian authorities are experienced in hunting down fugitive Mafia bosses, especially leaders of Cosa Nostra, the Sicilian Mafia. Despite corruption and intimidation, powerful bosses like Salvatore Riina, Bernardo Provenzano, and Salvatore Lo Piccolo were caught and sentenced to lengthy prison terms.

READ: No Way Out: The Life and Death of Mafia Killer Mario Prestifilippo

Whenever a boss goes into hiding it is essential to locate his circle of trusted men and women. The next step is removing this circle brick by brick until the fugitive needs to come out into the open. That is when authorities can find and apprehend him – or her.

“He’s very cold”

The hope is this tactic will work with Messina Denaro as well. He is wanted for some heinous and downright terroristic crimes, including his involvement in the 1992 murders of anti-Mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino and bomb attacks in Florence, Rome and Milan which killed 10 people in 1993.

READ: How gangsters try (and fail) to evade government surveillance

But some are having doubts the tactic will work. Especially since so many of Messina Denaro’s close relatives and associates have already been arrested and sent to prison. Among them his sister Anna Patrizia, who is rumored to have become an official member of Cosa Nostra. Something unheard of in earlier decades.

“We've arrested almost all of Messina Denaro's blood relations - his sister, cousins, in-laws,” Palermo Prosecutor Teresa Maria Principato said in 2016. “I thought this might spark a reaction in the man, but he's not normal. He's very cold.”

The hunt for the ghost Mafia boss continues.

U.S. Marshals arrested fugitive Rochester crime family hitman Dominic Taddeo on Monday one week after he had fled federal custody. The 64-year-old convicted killer was apprehended in Hialeah in Miami-Dade County and surrendered without any problems.

Taddeo made national headlines last week when it was reported that he had escaped from the halfway house where he was finishing up his sentence for racketeering and several gangland murders in Rochester in the 1980s.

Exactly why the mobster decided to flee is unknown. He was a year away from being released.

The hunt is on

Fugitives are confronted with eager U.S. Marshals hunting them down. In 2021 alone the U.S. Marshals arrested over 84,000 wanted individuals.

Gangsters Inc. interviewed former U.S. Marshal Mike Pizzi about tracking down mobsters who decide to go on the run. Pizzi once told prosecutors that “mob guys don’t jump bail and run away.” When he was proven wrong by Alphonse “Allie Boy” Persico, the brother of Colombo family boss Carmine “The Snake” Persico, who decided to go on the lam. “I was wrong but I made it right,” Pizzi concludes.

It took Pizzi and his fellow U.S. Marshals seven years to catch him. “My office was the lead investigation of the case,” Pizzi tells Gangsters Inc. “Persico had an organized crime family behind him and a ton of money to spend hiding. We also suspected that the New England mob was running an underground railroad for fugitive wise guys and something similar to a witness protection program for their members who were on the run. We eventually found him in Hartford, Connecticut.”

Consider it a job well done. The U.S. Marshals Service arrested 84,247 fugitives (27,399 on federal and 56,848 on state and local warrants) in 2021. On average, the agency arrested 337 fugitives per day (based on 250 operational days), including 6,240 gang members, 1,002 Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces Program fugitives wanted for drug trafficking and money laundering.

Additionally, the U.S. Marshals seized 7,028 guns during numerous violence reduction and counter gang operations last year. Gangsters Inc. sat down with U.S. Marshal Mike Pizzi to talk about his long and distinguished career. He discusses several fugitive mobsters he apprehended. Among them Alphonse “Allie Boy” Persico, the brother of Colombo family boss Carmine “The Snake” Persico. It took Pizzi and his fellow US Marshals seven years to catch him, but catch him they did. Read the interview with Pizzi here.

“Outstanding”

“The outstanding work this year by the U.S. Marshals Service exemplifies that the Department of Justice has no higher priority than keeping our communities safe,” said Deputy Attorney General Lisa O. Monaco. “At a time of unprecedented challenges posed by a global pandemic, the U.S. Marshals continue to deliver on their mission, tracking down and arresting more than 84,000 fugitives. The Department of Justice, through our law enforcement components like the U.S. Marshals Service, will continue to prioritize our efforts to reduce violent crime and keep our neighborhoods safe.”

Role of U.S. Marshals Service

The U.S. Marshals Service has a long history of providing assistance and expertise to other federal, state and local law enforcement agencies in support of their fugitive investigations. The U.S. Marshals Service leads 56 fugitive task forces (representing more than 1,500 law enforcement agencies) throughout the United States and eight congressionally-funded regional fugitive task forces. Staffed by federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, U.S. Marshals Service-led task forces target the most dangerous fugitives.

Europol launched its EU Most Wanted campaign 2021 last week hoping to find and arrest some of Europe’s most dangerous fugitives. The list features 61 criminals from all over the world and includes prominent names of the ‘Ndrangheta and Cosa Nostra.

The most prominent name on the list is someone who, by some, is considered nothing short of a ghost: Sicilian Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro. The elusive boss has been on the run and not seen since 1993. It remains to be seen whether his inclusion on this list will do anything to lead to his capture. But one can hope.

Photo: Matteo Messina Denaro

The focus of this campaign is on how many of these fugitive criminals are hiding in plain sight. They could be working as a butcher, a mechanic or a pizza baker. All the while, they have a dark, violent past that they are desperate to hide. The individuals named are all wanted for serious crimes, such as murder, drug trafficking and trafficking of human beings.

‘Ndrangheta hitman who bludgeoned two brothers to death

One of those men is Edgardo Greco (right), an alleged hitman for the ‘Ndrangheta who has been a fugitive since 2006. He was sentenced to life imprisonment because of his involvement in an ambush in which two brothers were killed because they did not bow down to the dominant ‘Ndrangheta clan.

The two brothers were lured to a fish shop with the promise they could pick up some clothing there. As soon as they entered the fish market, the door was barred and the two were savagely hit with iron clubs by Edgardo Greco and four other people. Their corpses were buried and three years later, they were dug up and melted with acid, for fear that they could be found.

Cosa Nostra cop killer

He has been a fugitive since 1998. He is seen as a leading member of a hit squad that, in 1985, was involved in the murder of the head of the investigative unit of the National Police and one of his escort police officers. The assassins fired more than 200 Kalashnikov rounds at the cops.

Since the launch of the website in 2016, the annual EU Most Wanted campaigns have experienced continued success. In 2020, 16 fugitives were arrested in total and 5 of these arrests were thanks to the campaign. Along with the tips that come from the public, criminals also turn themselves in as a result of the heightened public awareness that the campaign creates. In total, 110 fugitives have been arrested since 2016, with 41 of these arrests directly linked to tips that came from the EU Most Wanted website.

Fugitive ‘Ndrangheta Mafia boss Damiano Gallace was caught on Thursday in a secret bunker inside a flat in a cement factory in the town of Isca sullo Ionio in Calabria.

The mob boss had been on the run for just a year, relatively short when compared to other fugitive Mafiosi, after being sentenced to 14 years for various crimes.

Video of the arrest:

The bunker was hidden behind a false bedroom wall. The only way to open it was by turning a secret handle in a cupboard.

60-year-old Gallace was found living there with his 34-year-old partner and their 4-year-old daughter.

Bunkers inside or underneath flats, houses, and even caves are a common tactic used by Mafia bosses throughout Italy – from Sicilian Cosa Nostra and the Camorra in Campania to the ‘Ndrangheta in Calabria – to evade capture by authorities.

It is so difficult being part of a secretive brotherhood in the era of social media. Just ask Colombo crime family consigliere Ralph DiMatteo, who was charged in a wide-ranging racketeering indictment this week along with his boss and several other high-ranking goodfellas. He was the only one not in custody. A day later, DiMatteo’s son posted a photo of him relaxing in a swimming pool.

All hell broke loose. Talk about going viral. His son has since deleted the photo, but as always: what happens on the internet, stays on the internet for everyone to see. The picture was shared by newspapers around the world.

“Consider him a fugitive”

It was unclear exactly when the photo was taken. According to the NY Post, DiMatteo had left for Florida one day before the indictment came down and his lawyer had been in talks with prosecutors about turning himself in.

Seeing that DiMatteo had not yet turned himself in to authorities, they “consider him now to be a fugitive,” John Marzulli, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn, told the Staten Island Advance. A short while later, before any serious manhunt was underway, DiMatteo had quietly turned himself in.

Corrupting a labor union

As a leading member of the Colombo family, prosecutors had charged 66-year-old DiMatteo with using threats and extortion to corrupt a labor union and manipulate it to serve the crime family’s needs.

The Colombo family forced them to select vendors for contracts who were associated with them and demanded over $10,000 per month from the union’s affiliated Health Fund’s assets to the administration of the family, which included DiMatteo, boss Andrew “Mush” Russo, and underboss Benjamin “Benji” Castellazzo.

If found guilty, DiMatteo faces up to 20 years behind bars. No wonder he spent an extra day in freedom lounging in a Florida pool.

Being a fugitive seems to come with being a Mafia boss. Prison, death, rivals, cops; one has to stay a mile ahead of the competition. But how long can one successfully live such a life? ‘Ndrangheta boss Domenico Paviglianiti (photo above) had a good run, but it ended today with his arrest in the city of Madrid, Spain.

60-year-old Paviglianiti was arrested by Spain’s National Police with assistance from the Carabinieri from Italy. The two agencies had exchanged information after they found relatives of Paviglianiti living in Barcelona. They were then able to track him down.

At the time of his arrest in the working-class neighborhood of Cuatro Caminos, Paviglianiti was in possession of 6 cellphones, fake Portuguese identity papers, and over €6,000 euros in cash, which is over $7,000 dollars.

It wasn’t the first time he was busted in Spain, where he is protected and helped by alleged drug trafficking associates. Paviglianiti (right) was previously arrested there in 1996 and extradited to Italy. There he was sentenced to life in prison for several murders and drug trafficking. The sentenced was later reduced to 30 years, but, as happens quite often to influential Mafia bosses in Italy, he was then released early, in October of 2019.

A mistake, authorities said. But by then their boss had fled once more. Back to the Spanish sun. While he was away, in January of this year a court sentenced Paviglianiti in absentia to almost 12 years in prison for Mafia membership, murder, and drug trafficking.
