A 38-year-old Detroit gang boss was sentenced to life imprisonment Tuesday for murder, racketeering, narcotics trafficking, and other related crimes. Duane Peterson (photo above) was the leader of “It’s Just Us” (IJU), a violent 40-member strong street gang, which terrorized Detroit from 2014 through the beginning of 2019.

In May 2017, the IJU ambushed a 33-year-old Detroit man for allegedly disparaging an IJU associate. Peterson chased the man down and executed him, shooting him in the back of the head while he lay dying on the ground.

In March 2018, Peterson and another IJU member opened fire on a carful of innocent bystanders who happened to be stopped at a red light and saw Peterson beating a female in a liquor store parking lot.

Evidence at trial also showed that Peterson ran a heroin/fentanyl drug conspiracy, with at least fifteen IJU members and associates distributing the deadly drugs in Detroit, Jackson, Flint, Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky.

Eight defendants were charged in the case. Seven previously pleaded guilty; only Peterson proceeded to trial.

Mafia epics mesmerize the viewing public. With that in mind, new television series BMF looks to catch our eyes. Executive-produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, the Starz series follows the early beginnings of the notorious Flenory brothers as they write gangland history with their Black Mafia Family, or BMF.

The Black Mafia Family was founded in 1989 in Detroit by Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory and his brother Terry “Southwest T” Flenory and went on to make hundreds of millions trafficking drugs. To keep up appearances and launder money, they set themselves up in the music business, promoting rap stars like Fabolous and Young Jeezy.

If that ain’t a classic gangster story then what is?

The series stars Wood Harris (known best for his role as Avon Barksdale in The Wire) and his brother Steve, Russell Hornsby (Grimm) as patriarch Charles Flenory and Ajiona Alexus (Empire) as Kato. Rap super stars Snoop Dogg and Eminem also play parts. Snoop as a neighborhood minister and Eminem as White Boy Rick.

The series premiers on September 26 on Starz. Want to get a taste? Watch the trailer below:
