The boss and two members of the Rollin’ 30s Crips in the City of Roanoke were sentenced on racketeering and murder charges in federal court on August 15. 31-year-old gang leader Sean “Harlem Denk” Denzel Guerrant (photo above) pled guilty in November 2021 to racketeering conspiracy and conspiracy to commit murder and was sentenced to 37 years in prison.

The other two gang members are 21-year-old Trayvone Raycron Kasey, who pled guilty in July 2020 to federal racketeering, murder, and gun charges and was sentenced to 36 years in prison. 32-year-old Demonte Rashod Mack pled guilty in November 2021 to racketeering conspiracy, murder in aid of racketeering, and conspiracy to commit murder and was sentenced yesterday to 40 years in federal prison.

Later this year, 28-year-old Crips member Chauncey Dion Levesy will hear his sentence after pleading guilty in August 2019 to racketeering conspiracy and conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering.

The Roanoke set of the Rollin’ 30s operated primarily in northwest Roanoke, centered in and around the Lansdowne neighborhood.

Guerrant has admitted that he ordered Nickalas Lee, a 17-year-old, to kill a man to atone for his violations and perceived disloyalty to the gang.

In the early morning hours of June 15, 2017, Kasey drove Nickalas Lee to pick up the intended target, while Levesy and Mack followed them to a nearby Roanoke apartment complex. After arriving at the apartment complex, everyone except Levesy exited their vehicles while their victim ran away and hid, leaving Mack, Kasey and Lee together in one of the parking areas.

The intended victim was able to escape because Lee warned him that he was in danger. After he escaped, Lee refused to hand over his firearm to Kasey until Mack pointed his own firearm at Lee and told him to give it up. After handing over his firearm to Kasey, Lee ran away in an attempt to escape, but both Kasey and Mack chased him and ultimately shot him twice in the back and killed him.

After the shooting, Mack, Kasey, and Levesy returned to the gang’s “trap house” and met up with Guerrant and other Rollin’ 30s gang members, at which time everything that occurred was reported to Guerrant.

Eight months later, on February 9, 2018, Kasey arranged to meet with Markel Girty. When Girty arrived, Kasey leaned into the car, shot him once in the chest, and then stole his belongings. Girty was able to drive away from the scene, but later died from the gunshot wound.

“This case touched the lives and careers of many officers and detectives”

“This was a long, difficult case for this department and our community,” said Roanoke Police Chief Sam Roman. “Countless hours were poured into this investigation by members of the Roanoke Police Department. This case touched the lives and careers of many officers and detectives, who will never forget the young man who was murdered. While nothing we do will bring him back, we hope this outcome brings some peace to his family, friends and those who loved him. This outcome would not have happened without the successful partnerships between the Roanoke Police Department and our local, state and federal partners. These men are being held accountable for their actions, and Roanoke is a safer place as a result. This is a message to those in our community who choose to perpetuate gun violence and organized crime in our city: we will find you and do everything we can to hold you accountable for your actions.”

Black Axe: How Nigeria’s Mafia group went global and became an international criminal powerhouse

The Nigerian Mafia has been popping up in news reports around the world ever more frequently. Its members operating globally and in all sorts of criminal businesses – from cyber crime to prostitution and drug trafficking. One of the biggest Nigerian Mafia groups is called Black Axe. A two-year investigation by the BBC sheds a light on this secretive and powerful organization.

The BBC investigation by Charlie Northcott, Sam Judah and Peter Macjob “has unearthed new evidence of infiltration of politics, and a scamming and killing operation spanning the globe,” the BBC reported.

They talked to former members and hitmen, slowly but surely putting together the puzzle pieces that make up this large-scale organized crime group. They hit it big when a hacker showed them “tens of thousands of secret Black Axe documents - a huge cache of private communications, from hundreds of suspected members. The messages, which span 2009 to 2019, include communications about murder and drug smuggling. Emails detail elaborate and lucrative internet fraud. Messages plan global expansion. It was a mosaic of Black Axe criminal activity spanning four continents.”

Indeed, Black Axe operated anywhere from Nigeria to Italy and the United States. It uses secret initiation rituals and extreme violence to keep members in line. The billions it makes in illicit income is reinvested into businesses – both illegal and legal – and politics, adding another layer of protection, just like the Mafia groups did and still do in Italy.

Eleven members and associates of the Folk Nation Gangster Disciples were hit with a 20-count superseding indictment on Tuesday in federal court in Brooklyn. They were charged with seven non-fatal shootings that happened in Brooklyn over the course of 2020 in which six individuals were wounded.

Among the charged with violent crimes in-aid-of racketeering — including attempted murder and related firearms offenses – are: Oluwagbenga Agoro (21), Lorenzo Bailey (32), Quincy Battice (32), Davon Brown (27), Hans Destine (30), Jean Fremont (30), Ricardo Hepburn (19), McKoy Lima (26), Triston Lawrence (27), Deryck Thompson (22) and Michael Williams (19).

Dismantling the Brooklyn sets of the Folk Nation Gangster Disciples

Prosecutors allege that they are members and associates of the Folk Nation Gangster Disciples, also known as “GD.” Bailey, Destine, Fremont, and Thompson are leaders of the No Love City (“NLC”) subset of GD, with Destine and Fremont serving on NLC’s five-member “Steering Committee” — its top leadership. “These indictments are part of a coordinated effort to dismantle the Brooklyn sets of GD and their leadership by federal and state authorities,” the press release reads.

Destine, Fremont, Hepburn, Lawrence, Lima, Thompson and Williams were arrested Tuesday morning in Brooklyn. Bailey and Battice were arrested Tuesday morning in Atlanta, Georgia. Agoro and Brown were already in federal custody on prior charges. Additionally, during the execution of search warrants Tuesday morning, investigators recovered three firearms at Destine’s residence, one firearm at Lawrence’s residence, one from Thompson’s residence and one from Bailey’s residence in Georgia.

7 shootings

The charges relate to seven non-fatal shootings committed in Brooklyn over the course of 2020 in which six individuals were wounded.

The March 14, 2020 Shooting

As alleged, on March 14, 2020, Brown was involved in the shooting of a victim for perceived disrespect towards GD. An individual with the victim threw a drink inside the Gold Room Restaurant and Lounge in Prospect Lefferts Gardens, splashing a person standing with Brown. An argument ensued, and the victim, a Crips gang member, flashed a gang sign known as “dropping the rake” — a gesture intended to be insulting to GD. The argument continued outside the bar where Brown displayed a gun and fired a shot into the air. Brown then handed the gun to a coconspirator who walked behind the victim and shot the victim in the buttocks at close range. The gun was recovered by law enforcement and Brown’s DNA was found on the weapon.

The July 24, 2020 Shooting

As alleged, on July 24, 2020, Michael Williams was involved in the shooting of two individuals in Prospect Park South. On the previous evening, a member of GD had been shot and Williams and others took him to the hospital. After leaving the hospital, Williams and other members of GD retaliated against the Crips gang by driving to an area of Brooklyn they believed to be Crip territory where Williams and another gunman opened fire into a crowd of people, wounding two victims in the knee and chest.

The August 2, 2020 Shooting

On August 2, 2020, Lawrence allegedly shot at a Crips gang member in Prospect Lefferts Gardens. Prior to the shooting, the intended target of the shooting had been walking through a part of Prospect Lefferts Gardens known as GD territory while broadcasting himself on Instagram Live mocking GD. Immediately after the shooting, Lawrence sent an encrypted message to Brown using the Telegram encrypted application stating that he had just “boomed at” the intended target.

The November 2020 Shootings

As alleged, on November 7 and 9, 2020, Agoro, Bailey, Battice, Destine, Fremont, Hepburn, Lima and Thompson engaged in four separate drive-by shootings in Canarsie, Prospect Park South, and Brownsville, during which three victims were wounded. In the first November 7 shooting, Agoro, Bailey, Battice, Fremont and Thompson drove to Canarsie, where they shot at a group of individuals. The defendants then drove back to Thompson’s residence, before setting out again for a second shooting in Canarsie, during which two individuals were wounded in their legs. On November 9, 2020, Agoro, Destine, Hepburn and Thompson drove to Prospect Park South, where they shot at a group of individuals but did not hit anyone. Later that same day, Agoro, Fremont, Hepburn, Lima and Thompson drove to Brownsville for another shooting, where one victim was shot in the shoulder and grazed in her back.
