Authorities in Germany, Italy and the Netherlands dismantled a network of drug traffickers composed mainly of Albanian nationals. Last week, during a joint action, 35 suspects were arrested and 51 places were searched in the countries involved.

The group is allegedly responsible for the large-scale trafficking of cocaine and cannabis from South America to Europe and its further distribution across the European Union. They are also known for the use of violence, including episodes of torture and kidnapping for the purpose of extortion.

Making a cool €1 billion

Members were able to draw on significant financial resources allegedly obtained from previous drug trafficking activities. They had several logistic bases where the narcotic substances and the proceeds of the crime were stored and where the associates could meet. They also possessed an extensive fleet of vehicles equipped with sophisticated hidden compartments, cell phones equipped with encrypted texting applications and other utilities.

According to the investigation, the criminal network carried out at least 36 imports totaling 1 ton of cocaine and 1 ton of hashish between March 2020 and June 2021. These substances would have generated more than €1 billion on the distribution market. More than €1 million in cash was also seized during the course of the investigation.

The proceeds were shared among the members of the network according to their respective roles. In Germany, some suspects owned a luxurious restaurant, a bar and a real estate agency that were allegedly used to launder money from the drug trafficking activities.

German and Belgian authorities took down an Albanian organized crime group involved in large-scale drugs trafficking and money laundering across Europe. On 25 May, over 300 officers, including special intervention and K9 teams, carried out a series of simultaneous raids in both countries against the members of this family-structured criminal group.

The criminal organization under target specialized in the trafficking of heroin and cocaine. Investigators uncovered that the drugs were being smuggled in containers into Belgium, before being moved to Germany in vehicles equipped with sophisticated hidden compartments. The narcotics were then distributed throughout Europe.

An Albanian drug supplier who arranged cocaine deals within the United Kingdom worth almost £1.4 million has been jailed for 10 years on Tuesday. 35-year-old Taulant Stoica (photo above) was identified by British police as the fixer behind a number of drug deals in London and Bristol, arranged on encrypted messaging platform EncroChat.

Stoica used the EncroChat handle ‘Palefog’ to organize the handover of drugs by fellow Albanians Muhamet Quosja and Eduard Hadjini. They acted as runners for Stoica and were jailed for 10 years and three years respectively last year.

30-year-old Quosja was arrested October 13, 2020, when he was found in possession of £23,000 in cash. A handgun with 20 rounds of ammunition and 11 kilos of cocaine, with a street value of £1.1 million, were subsequently recovered from his home in Ilford.

“Daku”

Quosja’s phone was searched and contained a contact called ‘Daku’ (an Albanian term for friend) which matched Stoica’s number. Messages show an exchange between the two men, with Stoica directing Quosja to a postcode to handover cocaine.

39-year-old Hadjini, who lived close to Stoica in Abbey Wood, was arrested on April 1, 2021 after police followed him in his car to Bristol. It had been loaded with one kilo of cocaine which he was due to handover to 28-year-old Thomas Scarrett. Hadjini was arrested alongside fellow dealer Sokol Ajazi around a month after the Bristol exchange.

Officers searched a garage, seizing three more kilos of cocaine. The combined value of these drugs, plus an additional two kilos Hadjini handed to another dealer the previous month, could have fetched around £360,000 if sold on the streets of Great Britain.

Ajazi and Scarrett were both arrested and later sentenced to 5 years and 2 months and six years respectively.

Three phones and thousands in cash

Stoica himself was detained by police near his home on June 30, 2021. He had three mobile phones and more than £4,000 in his possession. A further £12,000 was recovered from his house. He was subsequently hit with drug and money laundering charges.

He admitted these offences at Woolwich Crown Court on October 6 last year and was jailed for 10 years at the same court on February 15, 2022.

“Stoica was pulling the strings behind these drugs deals which, had they not been prevented by OCP officers, would have resulted in cocaine flooding our streets,” Andrew Tickner, from the Organised Crime Partnership, said.

A large-scale international Albanian drug organization was shut down today by Europol and law enforcement. Over 600 police agents searched over 80 places and arrested 45 individuals in Belgium, Spain, Croatia, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands.

They are charged with importing cocaine from Latin America to various European ports, organizing the transport via planes, vessels, cars and lorries and running the wholesale trade. This high-level criminal network had set up a string of enterprises in various countries, including Croatia and Spain, to launder the profits, often using strawmen.

Its members travelled regularly to Dubai, Mexico and Colombia to arrange their illegal business and used encrypted communication tools to coordinate activities.

Cocaine seizures

Law enforcement began investigating the organization in Spain in 2018, with the arrest of a high-ranking member of the group. He is currently in pre-trial detention. In Belgium, investigations started following the seizure in September 2020 of drugs and large quantities of chemicals, used to transform and preserve cocaine for trading purposes.

Authorities link large quantities of cocaine seized during various searches all over Europe over the last years to the suspects.

An organized criminal network composed mainly of Albanian-speaking criminals, suspected of illegally trafficking drugs, was busted on July 13, Europol reported today. 107 persons were arrested in an operation, which involved law enforcement authorities in Spain, Germany and Albania.

The clan allegedly managed cannabis plantations in Spain where they cultivated and processed marijuana. They then trafficked it to other European countries for further distribution. This group was hierarchically structured, with branches operating internationally. Some of its members arrested have a history of drug trafficking in different countries.

The criminals were diverting the electricity supply to illegally cultivate the plants indoors. It is estimated that the stolen electricity amounts to over €1.6 million in lost utility revenue.

Some 400 police officers on the ground carried out simultaneous raids in 42 different locations in Spain (Tarragona, Barcelona, Girona and Castellón). An additional 9 searches were carried out a few days later.

These resulted in the arrest of 107 individuals, including Albanian, Spanish, Slovak and Greek nationals; 51 cannabis farms uncovered; 25 000 cannabis plants seized; €70 000 in cash; and two high end vehicles seized.
